Title: Eat, Pray, Love
Author: Elizabeth Gilbert
Pages: 352
Genre: Non-fiction, travel
All in all, I really liked this book. Written in three parts: the first part, Italy, was really difficult for me to read (in the 'too close to home' way); the second part, India, was annoying in all the religionness and I skimmed through it too fast; the last part, Indonesia, was my favorite - fun and hopeful. I also saw the movie, shortly after reading the book, and I found it stayed very true to the book. I thought the movie was well done.
BLURB: Plagued with despair after a nasty divorce, the author, in her early 30s, divides a year equally among three dissimilar countries, exploring her competing urges for earthly delights and divine transcendence. First, pleasure: savoring Italy's buffet of delights. Then, prayer and ascetic rigor: seeking communion with the divine at a sacred ashram in India. Finally, a balancing act in Bali, where Gilbert studies with a merry medicine man and plunges into a charged love affair. These destinations are all on the beaten track, but Gilbert's exuberance and her self-deprecating humor enliven the proceedings.
