Rounding out the last of my recent Colorado history obsession - this one was just a straight-out alphabetical list of every city, county, mountain & pass in Colorado and how they got their name. In spite of that, it was actually quite interesting.
I live in Fort Collins - originally Camp Collins, named from Col. Collins. The town kept the same name after the military fort was abandoned. Established 1873.
Fort Collins is in Larimer County - named in honor of General Larimer, one of the founders of Denver. Larimer is one of the original 17 counties of Colorado and contains more than half of the Rocky Mountain National Park within its boundaries.
And, as anyone from Colorado knows, "America the Beautiful" was inspired and written in Colorado, by Katherine Lee Bates in 1893, while visiting Pikes Peak.
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountains majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From see to shining sea.
